When friends ask what smart watch to get, the straight answer I give is to wait. The longer answer is that you should get either Apple's Watch if you have an iPhone or a Pebble Time if you want an e-ink style screen. But if there's time for a full conversation, then worth addressing whether you do, in fact, really want a smart watch at all.

With Apple's watch about to officially, finally drop on Monday, it's time to take a look at the state of the smart watch.

What is a Smart Watch

A smart watch is an extension of your phone. The idea (as every smart watch public relations person has dutifully told me) is that you can prioritize your incoming notices and know when to shift your attention. Say you're at dinner and you feel a vibration in your pocket. Instead of automatically pulling your phone out of your pocket, you can instead tilt your wrist and see whether it's your boss calling or a newsletter from a store you visited once a year and a half ago. A smart watch lets you decide which incoming information warrants your attention without pulling out your phone.

The idea makes sense. Anything that lets us spend less time staring at a glowing rectangle and more time in conversation or creation is good yes, I'm one of those condescending hippies. A mid conversation watch-glance is still rude, but it's less intrusive than a phone-glance. That said, I still cringe when I remember checking the time on a Moto 360 in a dark bar, and having everyone nearby stare, then ask questions.
